Police in Burera District has urged people conducting various businesses in water bodies including fishing and transport to respect instructions that regulate the use of waters.
Inspector of Police (IP) Justin Nkurikiyinka, the District Community Liaison Officer (DCLO), while meeting some of the individuals working in water bodies on August 5, noted that some of them refuse to stop when asked and overload their boats leading to maritime accidents.
The meeting followed the death of two students on July 24, who drowned in River Urugezi after a boat they were traveling in capsized, apparently due to overloading.
Thirteen people were, however, rescued.
IP Nkurikiyinka urged to use standard boats; use life jackets and more importantly avoid overloading which he is the primary cause of maritime accidents.
Joseph Zaraduhaye, Burera Vice-Mayor in charge of Economic development also appealed to them to respect maritime regulations and report members who tarnish their image by involving in illegal acts like transporting unlawful luggage such as drugs and smuggled goods.
