Bugesera: Three suspected conmen arrested

Three people have been arrested in Bugesera District for allegedly creating a ghost firm through which they defrauded unwitting single mothers.

Anselme Ntezimana, Francoise Kamariza and Julienne Kutambyi were caught red-handed on December 8, in Tetero Village of Kagenge Cell, Mayange Sector, Police said.

They were at the time registering single mothers promising them financial and material support for their children, Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Theobald Kanamugure, the Police spokesperson for the Eastern region, said.

“We received information from a journalist earlier that day on December 8, about a racket that had created a ghost company called Welfare Condition that offers varied support to children of single mothers,” CIP Kanamugire said.

“Reacting to that credible information, Police officers and investigators arrested the three suspects in the act later that day at about 6pm. We found there a number of women, who had turned up for registration, although other victims had already left at the time,” he added.

“So far, we have identified more than one hundred women that were defrauded; beneficiaries were required to pay registration fee of at least Rwf600 per head,” the spokesperson said.

He commended the responsiveness of the journalist. “Like the Police, journalists also have a duty to protect or to be the voice of the people, an act this journalist played well.”

“All social development activities involve local leaders, so if someone tells you about an ongoing project, be quick to inform your local leaders. Even if they tell you that registration is free, it could be a trick or a deliberate attempt to lure others,” CIP Kanamugire said.
