Bugesera: Suspected drug dealer arrested for attempting to bribe Police officer

A man identified as Martin Nsekeyehe, 44, is currently detained at Nyamata Police station after he was arrested for allegedly trying to bribe a Police officer who had caught him sneaking an illegal beer into the country from the neighboring Burundi.

Nsekeyehe a resident of Kinabwe cell in Rweru sector was apprehended on August 3 with four crates of an illegal beer called Brarudi which he had trafficked into the country through a porous border in Bugesera District.

It is alleged that after the officer caught him with the illegal drink, Nsekeyehe offered him Rwf10, 000 to bail himself out.

Senior Superintendent of Police Benoit Nsengiyumva, Police spokesperson for the Eastern region said the officer acted professionally and resisted the bribe attempts and arrested Nsekeyehe.

About 26 people, majority drivers have been arrested between January and June this year in connection with attempting to bribe police officers.

Nsekeye, who confessed to the act begged for forgiveness arguing that it was his first time.

“We are aware that there are individuals involved in illegal acts of trafficking illicit brew and other drugs into the country and sometimes they try to bribe officers in order to find their way to continue with their illegal business. Police officers know exactly what to do and trying to bribe them means you are committing another offence and you will be penalized for it,” SSP Nsengiyumva warned.
