Residents and local leaders in Bugesera District met with police officers operating in the area and discussed ways of enhancing partnership to address issues of drug abuse as means to crime prevention.
The discussions also evolved around addressing Gender Based Violence and Child abuse.
“We should shift from dealing with the consequences to preventing crimes, and this is possible if we all stand up against anything that might affect the well-being and the security of our country," Majenta Sebatware, the Head of good governance unit in Bugesera, said.
He added: "We can achieve this through enhanced awareness campaigns and providing timely information on drug dealers and abusers."
Sebatware further told local leaders attending the meeting that focus be put on prevention.
"Drug dealers live in your communities. We need to identify and report them. That way, we will be preventing consumption," he said.
He also urged them to raise awareness and report other crimes like gender based violence, child abuse, and drug abuse which he said can hamper safety and development.
The District Community Liaison Officer (DCLO), Inspector of Police (IP) Jeanine Nyiramugisha encouraged them to play a crucial role in preventing and fighting against any form of divisionism and to report any person with genocide denial or with genocide ideology.
Article 3 of the law n° 84/2013 of 11/09/2013 on the crime of genocide ideology and other related offences defines the genocide ideology as any deliberate act, committed in public whether orally, written or video means or by any other means which may show that a person is characterized by ethnic, religious, nationality or racial-based with the aim to advocate for the commission of genocide or to support the genocide.
