Alert residents of Rilima Sector in Bugesera District helped Police arrest two people, who allegedly stole over Rwf1 million from a shop.
Narrating how the duo was arrested, the Eastern Region Police Spokesperson Inspector of Police (IP) Jean de Dieu Kayihura said that a group of residents, after learning that their colleague had been robbed on October 25, they informed the police, but also tried locate who the suspected thieves could be.
“The suspects identified as Jackson Higiro and Robert Gatabazi walked into the shop of one Jean Marie Vianney Hakizimana as he was running errand in the backyard and stole Rwf1, 040, 000 from the drawer before fleeing,” IP Kayihura said.
“When Hakizimana returned and realized the money wasn’t in the counter, he asked the people, who were sitting at the veranda of the shop if anyone had entered the shop. Fortunate enough, they had seen the two men.”
Kayihura added residents immediately called the police as they trailed the suspects.
“The residents were able to locate and apprehend the two suspects as they attempted to board motorcycles, with all the money. Police arrived immediately and took up the case. The money was handed over to the owner while the culprits are currently detained at Rilima police station,” the spokesperson said.
He thanked the residents for their community policing response.
He said that the suspects will be charged under article 300 of the penal code which provides a prison sentence of up to two years, and a fine of two to five times the value of what was stolen.
