Bugesera: Police roots for safer use of water bodies

Police in Bugesera have made a clarion call to residents of Kamabuye Sector to observe every recommended safety measure when using Lake Cyohoha.

The call was made recently by Assistant Inspector of Police (AIP) Benjamin Muhawenimana, the District Political and Civic Education Officer while speaking to members of local night security patrols.

He said that to successfully safeguard the water body it requires partnership between security organs, authorities and residents living around the lake.

AIP Muhawenimana observed that lives continue to be lost due to drowning caused by not taking the required precautionary measures.

He urged them to remain vigilant on both land and water to stop and report all those who violate water safety standards or engage in illegal fishing and using substandard fishing nets.

"Anyone using water transport is required to wear a life jacket, only engine boats are allowed in any water business," AIP Muhawenimana said.

He also mentioned that smugglers continue to use the lake especially at night to transport merchandise and urged the community patrols to report people involved in such illegal business activities
