Over 3000 litres of illicit were seized in an operation against drugs in Bugesera District.
The substances known in the area as karidazoke were seized on November 11, in Rwarusaku Village of Kibenga Cell, Mayange Sector.
Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Theobald Kanamugire, the Police spokesperson for the Eastern region, said the substances were recovered from two illegal distilleries.
"The operation was conducted jointly with local leaders based on credible information from residents," CIP Kanamugire said.
"The illicit brew was disposed of in presence of residents, who were also sensitized on ill effects of abusing such psychotropic substances, criminal repercussion and the overall insecurity users cause in their families and communities," he noted.
"These are operations supplementing awareness campaigns against drugs, which are continuous not only in Eastern but across the country. Fighting illicit drugs fall under the priorities of Rwanda National Police," said Kanamugire.
He thanked the role of the public in identifying and reporting distillers of illicit substances and drug traffickers, and called for continued partnership to prevent such criminal businesses.
