Bugesera: Medical workers acquire firefighting skills

As part of the effort to respond to fire outbreaks, Rwanda National Police (RNP) reached out to medical workers and staff of ADEPR hospital in Nyamata, Bugesera District and trained them on how to use various equipments to put out fire.

Assistant Inspector of Police, Cyprien Uwitonze, the District Community Liaison Officer for Bugesera, while speaking to about 100 hospital staff on November 27, urged them to always take precaution to prevent fires, and intervene in time when it breaks out, to prevent escalation and extending to other parts of the buildings.

The fire fighting skills extended to the hospital staff, who also and security personnel, included how to use fire extinguisher, sand and other gadgets to put out fire.

“In most cases, fire outbreak in buildings are caused by short circuit resulting from old or substandard installations and overloaded gadgets, so always check such installations and switch off all electronics, whenever you are away, not only here at the hospital but even in your respective homes,” AIP Uwitonze said.

The director of the hospital, Dr. Jean Fidèle Niyomugabo thanked Rwanda National Police for extending the skills to the hospital workers adding that it will help in case fire breaks out.

Meanwhile AIP Uwitonze urged them to always call police in case fire breaks out, on toll free lines 111 and 112 or 0788311120, for quick response and to supplement their efforts.

Between January and June this year, 49 cases of fire occurred including those related to wildfire.

Kigali City registers the highest percentage of fire outbreaks compared to other parts of the country. In 2013, 79 out of 84 cases that occurred were registered while in 2014, a total of 110 out of the
121 cases were also registered in Kigali.

Rwanda National Police is currently conducting awareness in communities and in institutions, equipping them with skills on how to overcome and prevent fires.
