The director of Gender promotion in Rwanda National Police, Supt. Pelagie Dusabe held discussions with female police officers operating in Bugesera District on October 15 and urged them to be result-oriented and exhibit teamwork with their male counterparts
The meeting aimed at enlightening the female officers on gender related issues including gender equality and find solution to challenges they could be facing in their day-to-day duties.
It is part of the countrywide tour by the gender promotion directorate in RNP, which seeks to enhance the role of female officers in policing, which started on October 5.
Supt. Dusabe reminded the over 30 female officers operating in Bugesera, to always work with determination, zeal and love their profession in ensuring security of Rwandans.
She told them that they have equal rights like men adding that they should “show those rights by executing their tasks.”
“You should train more, acquire more skills even through research and by doing so, we are fronting our valued role in the country’s transformation process,” she said.
“When female officers go for peacekeeping missions, they encounter policing challenges related to gender, so this is an opportune moment for you to understand your rights more, both locally and beyond borders where they can send you to represent your country.”
She urged them to always believe in themselves and see themselves as the solution to their needs.
“Discipline is a key pillar in everything,” she said, urging them to desist from any sort of malpractice like corruption.
With the current total force composed of over 20 percent women officers, Rwanda National Police is aimed at the minimum 30 percent government policy.
As part of the gender promotion in RNP, the force organizes annual women convention where they meet to discuss issues that concern them.
Women officers are also deployed to operate in areas where they have their families, and have equal chances either in promotion and peacekeeping operations like their male counterparts.
Currently, female officers comprise 30 percent of the total officers in peace support operations in seven mission areas.
