Bugesera: Duo arrested over impersonation

Two people, who were masquerading as law enforcers and defrauding unwitting members of the public, were arrested by the Police in Bugesera District on April 9.

Gad Bwokobwimana, 30, and Egide Karasira, 38, were arrested in Juru Sector where they were attempting to con a resident of Rwf50,000

Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Hamdun Twizeyimana, the Police spokesperson for the Eastern region, said that the two men were guising as law enforcers and targeting especially people whose relatives are detained for unlawful acts.

"Bwokobwimana and Karasira, who were masquerading as law enforcers attached to Juru Police station, reached out to a woman whose husband is detained at the same police station and demanded money so as to release her husband," said CIP Twizeyimana.

"One of them was calling himself a Police officer while the other as an investigator and wanted Rwf50,000 from the would-be victim to set her husband free," he added.

"This prompted the woman to report the two men to Police at Juru station and they were arrested red-handed receiving the money."

He thanked the woman for distancing herself from unlawful acts and reporting the suspects to face justice.

"Anyone who solicits or receives money for an illegal service should be reported. If you are suspected to have committed an offence, giving a bribe will be another crime which you will face," he warned.

In article 4 of the law on corruption, soliciting or receiving a bribe attracts an imprisonment of between five and seven years and a fine of up to five times the value of the solicited or received bribe.

Under article 174 of the penal code, anyone convicted of fraud faces between two and three years in prison and a fine of between Rwf3 million and Rwf5 million.
