Bugesera: Community Policing Committees acquire crime prevention skills

About 200 members of Community Policing Committees (CPCs) from the sectors of Rweru, Gashora and Mayange in Bugesera District enrolled in a one-day basic training on December 7, on how to combat crimes with emphasis on gender based violence.

The exercise was held separately in the three sectors.

This was also a moment for the crime preventers to share based practices as a way of getting a common understanding on crime detection, sharing timely information and subsequently leading to crime prevention.

In Gashora Sector, Inspector of Police (IP) Charles Kabanda, the station commander for Gashora, told the community policing agents to always be on watch-out on incidences of domestic and gender based violence, which are affecting communities and creating insecurity in affected families.

“It’s true that we are seeing a big turn up of victims of gender based violence coming forward to report injustices but the fact is that there are still women and children being assaulted, tortured and denied their rights, which we should continue to fight actively and collectively,” IP Kabanda said.

While speaking to the CPCs from Rweru and Mayange, Assistant Inspector of Police (AIP) Cyprien Uwitonze, the District Community Liaison Officer of Bugesera, commended them for the their dedicated community policing duties, which she said have improved the overall safety in the area.

AIP Uwitonze appealed to them to form a strong community policing bond with the residents, sensitise them on their role to fight and prevent crimes like GBV and drug abuse.

One of the CPC members from Rweru, Theoneste Habimana said: “It is in our mandate as community policing committees to supplement Rwanda National Police activities to fight and prevent crimes, so this training comes to strengthen our skills, understanding and remind us what we really stand for.”

Another member, Bibiane Uwababyeyi thanked police for empowering the public to ensure own security adding that they will continue to be agents of change and work with residents to identify security challenges and report them in time, for quick response.
