The District Police Commander of Bugesera, Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Alexis Ntaburana has reminded commercial cyclists in the area to “put safety first” in their transportation business to prevent fatal accidents that result from reckless use of roads.
He urged them to respect road traffic standards to ensure their safety and that of their passengers as well as other road users.
The message was delivered during a meeting with about 500 cyclists, held on September 1 at Bugesera youth centre. Bugesera is one of the districts with a big number of cyclists.
“Every business has standards; yours, equally, has rules that are supposed to be followed for your own safety and that of others you transport on meet on roads. That should be respected,” CIP Ntaburana told the cyclists.
Cyclists, motorcyclists and pedestrians are said to be the majority that either cause or involved in road carnage.
“You wake up in the morning going to work to earn a living, develop yourselves, and give basic necessities to your dependants, but not to die or risk lives of others. This is why road safety rules and regulations are in place,” the DPC said.
The DPC also urged them to fight crimes by reporting anyone involved in illegal doings, singling out drug dealers.
He further warned them against drug related crimes, either involving directly or facilitating drug traffickers.
“We are aware some of you hide behind this business to sell narcotic drugs. Some of your members have been arrested, but we are happy that most of you are our partners and have taken a bold and responsible step to report such criminals,” he said, urging them to report to police anyone involved in any wrongdoing.
