As part of the Rwanda National Police (RNP) community policing programmes, the force engaged residents of Gatsibo District to take a lead in fighting drug abuse.
While speaking to about 300 residents of Bigarama Sector on March 23, the District Police Commander (DPC) Supt. Eric Kabera said that breaking the chain of drug dealers and abusers partly rests in their commitment to fight it.
“Drugs not only affect people’s lives but also, most criminals are usually drug addicts. Different drugs affect the body in different ways, but all drugs chemically have negative effects on the users and ultimately becomes a security challenge to communities," Supt. Kabera told the residents.
"Drugs affect how a person feels, hears, sees or thinks and influences someone to act contrary."
“Drug abuse can also cause individuals to become aggressive, making it difficult for them to keep up with the family which is why cases of domestic violence are commonly related to drug abuse."
He urged them not to give room for either abusers or dealers residing in their neighborhoods, instead report them to police adding that some of the abusers can be rehabilitated.
The District Division Manager, Emmanuel Nzabonimpa told residents that they have the power to fight drugs abuse and trafficking if they collaborate with security organs.
He also thanked RNP for its continued outreach programmes saying they help in preventing crimes through strong collaboration with security organs.
