Anti-GBV campaign continues in Kicukiro

Rwanda National Police (RNP) has called on residents of Kicukiro District to be credible partners in the fight against gender-based-violence (GBV) by being proactive in their communities to discourage the scourge.

The message was delivered as part of an ongoing nationwide campaign against GBV and child abuse.

The campaign in Kicukiro was conducted in two sectors; Kigarama and Masaka, where over 200 residents turned up.

It was also attended by members of the Community Policing Committees, representatives of National Women and Youth councils.

In Kigarama, AIP Emmanuel Mashami, the Community Liaison Officer of Kigarama, told participants that there is no place for GBV in any society that seeks sustainable development, unity and peace.

He called upon residents to be the “eyes and ears” of their neighborhoods against GBV and child abuse.

“We all have a duty to ensure that the rights of women and children are respected and justice ensured for perpetuators to be punished," he said.

“Violence against women and child abuse obstruct economic development, threatens peace and prosperity, and slows full participation in family and community affairs. We all need to support each other in ensuring that every family lives in harmony.”

He further urged them to advance the rights of women and children.

“On top of partnering with law enforcers to overcome GBV, you should also look for opportunities in your community and beyond that enable you to participate in advancing equality,” he said.

“It is through such opportunities that you get chances to promote gender equality, as well as meet others and share best practices, and lay strategies to overcome any emerging challenges."

He also reminded participants to shun drug abuse and consumption of illicit liquor, which usually fuel acts of GBV and child abuse in any society.
