The ongoing Rwanda National Police (RNP) campaign against the manufucture, sell and consumption of illicit drugs and cannabis led to the arrested of four suspected drug dealers on Monday.
The suspects include a woman, Beata Muhayimana, 34, who was arrested in Gasabo District, Ndera Sector, after she was found in possession of 73 pellets of cannabis and illicit brew. She is currently detained at Ndera Police Post as investigations continue.
The other suspects were identified as Claude Rutayisire, 31, Yves Ishimwe, 25, and Abdou Bugingo, 26 who were arrested in Nyarugenge District in connection with selling cannabis.
Police Spokesperson for the Central Region, Superintendent Modest Mbabazi, said that the ongoing campaign against drug abuse is aimed at safeguarding the Rwanda community, especially the youth, against the adverse effects of consuming and dealing in drugs.
"This operation indicates Police’s continued zero tolerance on drugs and its efforts to sustain the peace that we enjoy in Rwanda. Residents should therefore always work with Police by providing timely information on drugs dealers and other criminals,” he said.
“Young people should not be lured into drug abuse but concentrate on their education. Do not think of shortcuts which label you a criminal - and when the time comes in the future - you will be a much better person who can add to the development that Rwanda has achieved."
In its countrywide campaign dubbed “Turn Back Drugs to Protect the Youth”, RNP employs very many tactics to nub criminals, including the use of trained sniffer dogs, which have a vital role in this fight and sensitizing the general population against the scourge.
Besides constantly sensitizing masses throughout the country, RNP has stepped mechanisms to monitor the borderlines against any criminals that plan to smuggle drugs into Rwanda.
