Police in Nduba Sector, Gasabo District was joined by officials from prosecution to destroy 35Kg of cannabis and other confiscated illicit brews, in a public display that is aimed at discouraging the public from engaging in drug abuse.
The District Judicial Officer of Gasabo, Chief Inspector of Police, Richard Iyaremye, hailed residents in the area for upholding practical values of community policing by providing timely information that led to the confiscation of the illicit products.
“As you well know, Rwanda National Police is leading the fight against the consumption, sell and smuggling of illegal drugs. The residents have played a significant role in providing information to police and this should continue,” CIP Iyaremye said.
“Responsible residents and the youth must desist from the consumption of narcotics but focus on improving their lives and contribute to the development of the country.”
In a bid to kick out drug abuse, RNP conducted several campaigns last year; one particular one being in September, when a sensitization campaign was launched and conducted in about 200 schools to challenge students in being agents of change.
In September last year, Police in Burera District also destroyed narcotic drugs valued at Rwf32 million, including tens of thousands of liters of elicit brew and 5,224 rolls of marijuana.
On the fight against drug smuggling, Police intercepted four transnational drug traffickers, last year, who were in transit at Kigali International Airport with a total of 8.5 kilograms of cocaine valued at Rwf299 million.
Article 594 of the Rwandan penal code, stipulates that, any person who, unlawfully, makes, transforms, imports, or sells narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances within the country, shall be liable to a term of imprisonment of three to five years and a fine of Rwf500,000 to Rwf5 million.
