Intensified Police operations against motorcycle theft recovered another stolen motorcycle in Rubavu District on Wednesday June 24.
The TVS motorcycle registration number RE874H was recovered from the suspect thief identified as Fabien Alijuni Munyaneza, 24, in Busasamana Sector, Gishonga Cell.
It was stolen on Tuesday from the parking lot, where the owner; Etienne Imanizabayo, 34, had parked it.
Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Bonaventure Twizere Karekezi, the Police spokesperson for the Western region, said that Imanizabayo, a taxi-moto operator, was quick to report to the Police and in his cooperative in Rubavu after he could not find his motorcycle where he had left it.
“Later that evening, Munyaneza, after realizing that he had been identified as the prime suspect and the search for him was going on, he called heads of the motorcycle cooperative in Busasamana claiming that he had found a lost motorcycle. He was demanding Rwf200, 000 as condition to give it back,” said CIP Karekezi.
He added: “The heads of the motorcycle cooperative in which the victim belongs, called and worked with the Police to locate and arrest Munyaneza with the motorcycle after tricking him to believe that they were bringing the money as he had demanded.”
“This was a planned theft so as to defraud the victim under pretence that he had found his motorcycle.”
It is the fourth motorcycle to be stolen and recovered this month involving six suspected thieves.
On June 12, two people were arrested in Huye District, with a stolen motorcycle. On June 7, two other motorcycles were recovered in Ngoma and Gisagara districts from two people.
