AMNESTY MONTH: 25 complete course on physical security and stockpile management

A physical security and stockpile management course concluded on Friday, October 4, at the Police Training School (PTS) Gishari in Rwamagana District.

The week-long course, which is part of the Africa Amnesty Month 2024, was attended by 25 people, including Police officers, park rangers and private security service providers.

The community-based policing workshop was organized in partnership with the Regional Centre for Small Arms (RECSA) under the Africa Amnesty Month project in Rwanda, to educate and sensitize the society on surrendering arms.

This is the second batch following the first one of 40 people, which focused on risk management, storage management, inventories, hazard and risk as well as external and internal armoury.

The course also looked at ammunition surveillance, small arms and ammunition transportation, stockpile elimination Andy emergency planning and responses.

The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Interior, Benjamin Sesonga pointed out that security that reels on community-based policing, which lays a firm foundation for crime prevention and a culture of responsiveness towards a crime-free environment for all.

"As private security service providers, park rangers and Police officers; this training should be another reminder to work with the public to fight the consequences that can be brought about by owning arms illegally," Sesonga said.

The PTS Commandant, Commissioner of Police (CP) Robert Niyonshuti, said that the course provided valuable insights into the management of Small Arms and Light Weapons (SALW), as a key factor in regional insecurity.

"Community policing is not just theoretical; it is a practical strategy crucial to preventing crime and improving security... it has highlighted the importance of building trust and engaging communities to address the dangers posed by illicit arms," CP Niyonshuti said.

ACP (rtd) Damas Gatare, the Director of Operations and Programmes at RECSA, said that the physical security and stockpile management course signifies Rwanda's commitment to safety and security, and the well-being of the citizenry.
