Twenty women parliamentarians from seven African countries visited Rwanda National Police headquarters on November 13 to gather first hand information on the RNP response against Gender Based Violence (GBV).
The team is part of the delegation of 70 legislators who are in the country for a four-day official visit aimed at learning from Rwanda’s different development programmes.
The lawmakers are from; Central African Republic, Eritria, Democratic Republic of Congo, Congo Brazzaville, Burundi, Niger and Madagascar.
The visit to Rwanda was facilitated by the African Union.
Supt. Berine Mukamana, the Director for Anti- Gender Based Abuse & child protection in RNP guided the women legislators through various facilities like anti-GBV desk and Isange One Stop Centre established to respond to incidences of gender and domestic violence.
Leila Ben Ali, the and head of Gender Promotion in AU and head of the delegation commended RNP’s efforts to respond to GBV.
"We came to RNP to learn and gain experience on how the force managed to address GBV so that members adapt them in their respective countries,"Leila said.
She appreciated the free services rendered to GBV victims at Isange One Stop Centre.
“Isange One Stop Centre is new and so unique to some of us,” she said, calling upon African countries to emulate it to further give hope to victims.
