The role of the youth in the ongoing campaign against drugs abuse is crucial to combat the vice which is rated high among the young generation.
Senior Supt of Police (SSP) Urbain Mwiseneza, Director for Anti-Narcotics Directorate in Rwanda National Police made the remarks on January 21 while speaking to over 470 youth members of ADEPR church in Rwanda drawn from various parishes, who were attending a two-day retreat organised by the church held in Gitarama Cell of Nyamabuye Sector in...District.
SSP Mwiseneza explained to the youth that narcotics and illicit drinks like Kanyanga and other trafficked and locally made brew, pose danger to human health, affects the labour market and fighting them should be made a priority.
Fighting drug abuse is among the priorities of RNP.
He explained to them on laws related to drugs abuse and urged them to always provide timely information on users and dealers or other people involved in criminal activities.
Article 594 of the Rwandan penal code, stipulates that, any person who, unlawfully, makes, transforms, imports, or sells narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances within the country, shall be liable to a term of imprisonment of three to five years and a fine of Rwf500,000 to Rwf5 million.
SSP Mwiseneza also reminded them of people who take advantage of them or give them empty promises for selfish ends through trafficking for hard labour and sexual exploitation.
"Don't let such people take advantage of you; report them or information other people of what they tell you and always rush to inform police to help you find out if really what they are promising you is real or just a hoax to lure you in a trap," he said.
RNP is currently engaged in countrywide awareness against human trafficking to turn back the crime which is rare but considered a problem if not tackled at an early stage in Rwanda.
