Rwanda National Police on Thursday apprehended a 74-year old woman identified as Esperance Nyirabahakwa, and her daughter Immaculate Niyonsenga in connection with drug trafficking.
The suspects who hail from Kamonyi District, Kayumbu Sector, Mayange cell are currently detained at Kayumbu Police Station.
“We received information from community members in Mayange Cell that there were drugs at Nyirabahakwa’s house," Superintendent Vita Hamza, Kamonyi District Police Spokesperson, said.
"Police officers went and searched her house where they recoved 317 pellets amd 4kgs of cannabis, and 100 sachets of chief waragi (banned gin),” he added.
He went on to say that; “We were skeptical that the old woman could be dealing in drugs but investigations later pointed at her daughter Niyonsenga. However, the old woman was very protective of her daughter and refused to link her to the drugs but when we arrested the daughter, she immediately confessed and pinned the monther as an accomplice.”
“We appreciate the cooperation from the people and the timely reporting of such crimes. If we keep up with this cooperation, there is no doubt drugs would not be a problem to us,” said Hamza
He however warned those still involved in illegal businesses such as drug trafficking and consumption.
He called on the youth to say no to drugs and reiterated that Police is engaged in various sensitization programmes to bring everyone on board to fight and prevent such illegal and criminal acts.
