About 3, 000 students from four secondary schools were last week sensitized on negative consequences of engaging into narcotic drugs including abuse.
They were also called upon to play a personal role to report anyone they know or suspect to be consuming or selling illicit drugs.
The students are from Institut Baptiste de Buberuka (IBB) in Rulindo District, Ecole Sécondaire Muhororo and ADEC, both from Ngororero District and Collège de Bethel of Ruhango District.
The separate discussions between Police officers and students took place on June 23 as part of Rwanda National Police’s ongoing campaigns to fight against narcotic drugs, which are still rated high among the youth.
While addressing about 1200 students of IBB, Inspector of Police (IP) Fidele Mbonimana, the District Community Liaison Officer (DCLO) for Rulindo, explained to the students the various contrabands and other psychotropic substances that can affect their education dreams.
He cited kanyanga and other illicit gin packed in plastic bags, locally made illicit brew and cannabis as some of the substances classified as narcotic drugs in Rwanda, and which should be fought.
He further noted that, some of the above narcotic drugs contain a highest alcoholic content, posing multiple life consequences to consumers.
IP Mbonimana challenged the students to put much efforts on studies, shun the use of narcotic drugs and importantly join hands with Police to fight them either at school or in their communities, through timely information sharing.
The students and teachers of Institut Baptiste de Buberuka, also witnessed the activity of destroying an assortment of narcotic drugs which had been previously seized by Police.
The destroyed narcotic drugs include 2,400 sachets of Blue Sky, 2,400 sacheta of African Gin, 106 rolls of cannabis and 26 liters of kanyanga.
“Some of peers, after taking narcotic drugs end up engaging in sexual malpractices through which some girls end up with unwanted pregnancies, dropping out of school and worse still unprotected sex leadings to STDs,” IP Mbonimana told the students.
Similar messages were also delivered in other schools as RNP continues to ensure that the vice of illicit drugs is effectively combated.
