At least 22 people, on Friday, completed a three-week ‘Firefighting and Rescue’ course at the Police Training Schoo (PTS) Gishari in Rwamagana District.
Participants were drawn from Rwanda National Police (RNP), Rwanda Defense Forces (RDF) and Airport staff.
The emergency response course, the first of its kind, was organized and conducted by Integrated Polytechnic and Regional Centre (IPRC) Gishari in partnership Strategic Fire Solution, a Germany-based firefighting company.
It covered two important aspects; Aircraft and elevator emergencies and response. In particular, the course exhausted areas such as aircraft construction, rescue and firefighting techniques; emergency plan and communication and command.
Others include mechanism of elevators and techniques to rescue passengers.
While speaking at the closing of the course, Senior Supt. David Kabuye, Principal IPRC Gishari said that “knowledge and skills development is continuous.”
He reminded participants that emergency response is a teamwork field and urged them to put to use the acquired skills both in times of need and extending them to others.
Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Jean Baptiste Seminega, the Commanding Officer of the RNP Fire and Rescue Brigade, said that this is an important package in building skills in all fields of emergencies.
“We had little knowledge in these fields especially in emergencies on elevators. We equally had few experts in aircraft emergency response, so these practical exercises were pertinent to develop more experts in these fields,” ACP Seminega said.
