14th Women Police Convention wraps up, highlighting women's role in building safe communities

Female police officers have been urged to strengthen their leadership, professionalism, and commitment to public service as the Rwanda National Police (RNP) concluded the 14th Annual Women Police Convention on Wednesday, June 24.

The Convention, held annually, brings together RNP leadership, government officials, partner institutions, and police officers to discuss women’s empowerment, gender equality, and strategies to enhance the performance of female officers in policing.

Discussions focused on professional ethics and core policing values, including integrity, justice, dedication, self-confidence, mentorship, leadership, research, and public service, as well as the critical role women play in building safe, resilient families.

In her closing remarks, the Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIGP) in charge of Administration and Personnel, DCG Jeanne Chantal Ujeneza, said the convention was designed to help female officers make better use of their abilities and the opportunities available to them.

"The purpose of this forum is to empower female police officers to maximize their potential, enhance their productivity, and strengthen their contribution to policing and national development," DCG Ujeneza said.

She noted that the inclusion of male officers in the convention promoted dialogue and the exchange of ideas on gender equality and complementarity within the Rwanda National Police.

Throughout the two-day event, participants discussed ways to balance professional duties with family responsibilities while maintaining high standards of performance.

They also reflected on the importance of self-confidence, long-term career development, and overcoming challenges related to gender equality and professional growth.

Other sessions focused on the conduct expected of female police officers, common professional challenges, and measures to prevent misconduct while promoting excellence in service delivery.

The convention further examined initiatives undertaken by the Rwanda National Police to advance gender equality and empower women and girls both within the institution and the wider community.

DCG Ujeneza expressed confidence that the knowledge and experience gained during the forum would help participants improve their professionalism, dedication, and commitment to duty.

She also commended development partners, particularly the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), for their continued support in implementing development programs and campaigns to prevent crime and combat gender-based violence.
