140 Police officers depart for UN mission in Mali

The Rwanda National Police contingent of 140 officers under Formed Police Unit Two (FPU2) left this morning to Mali to replace the same number of Rwandan peacekeepers, who completed their one year mandate under the UN Multidimensional Integrated Stabilisation Mission in Mali (Minusma).

FPU2 led by Assistant Commissioner of Police Jean Baptiste Seminega, includes 21 females and will be based in the northern city of Gao.

The Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of Administration and Personnel, Juvenal Marizamunda, who was accompanied by other senior officers presided over the departure at Kigali International Airport at around 4:00 am.

The mandate of FPU includes protection of VIPs, security of key installations, escort duties crowd control and humanitarian assistance.

Meanwhile the maiden contingent led by Chief Supt Bertin Mutezintare is also expected to arrive in the country later this evening.
