150 Police peacekeepers off to CAR for mission rotation

A contingent of 150 Rwanda National Police officers on October 8 departed for one-year peacekeeping operations under the UN Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA).

The contingent under Rwanda Formed Police Unit two (RWAFPU II) headed by Chief Superintendent of Police Reverien Rugwizangoga and includes 16 females. It will replace the maiden RWAFPU I deployed in CAR in September last year. Read more

Traffic Month ends at a high note

The Road Safety Month came to an end this week after campaigns held in all concerns of the country and reaching out to majority of the road users.

Launched on September 07, the Road Safety Month was held under the theme “Respect Traffic Rule: Save Lives”. The month long campaign came to an end on October 07.

 The exercise was conducted in line with sensitizing road users on road safety standards with an objective of  enhancing public knowledge on traffic rules and regulations with a view to prevent accidents and dangers of violation of traffic rules. Read more

Malawi Police picks peacekeeping lessons from Rwanda

A delegation from Malawi Police Force, on October 9, concluded a two-day visit at the Rwanda National Police (RNP) where they intended to learn best practices in international peacekeeping.

The four-member delegation was accompanied by two senior officers from the Norwegian Police Service, which is currently partnering with the Malawian government to advance the country’s peacekeeping profile.

At the end of the tour, Head of Delegation, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Jane Mandala, noted that RNP was selected for the study tour due to its reputation, renowned professionalism and significant contribution to United Nations peacekeeping missions.

“Rwanda is ranked the fifth largest contributor to UN Peacekeeping missions and among the leading contributors of UN female peacekeepers, among other achievements. This makes RNP an exemplary platform on which our country and others that seek to perform well can pick lessons from,” she said. Read more

Why 'Gishari Integrated Polytechnic' became second best exhibitor at TVET Expo

In the just concluded Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) fourth annual exhibition, Gishari Integrated Polytechnic (GIP) emerged the second best exhibitor in the education cluster beating close to 200 competitors. 

The school that was established and managed by Rwanda National Police (RNP) in partnership with WorkForce Development Authority (WDA), showcased its best innovations that left fellow exhibitors, the public and government officials overwhelmed by the students’ skills.

Like any other participant, GIP brought out the best of their technology but judgement on who made the impression solely lied to the public.

According to GIP’s Vice Principle in charge of Academics and Training, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Nicholas Kalisa, what made the two-and-a half  years old school emerge the second best was due to their fire fighting technology and ultra modern technological irrigation mechanisms. Rwandan peacekeepers in Darfur decorated

Rwandan police and military peacekeepers serving under the African Union – United Nations Hybrid Operations in Darfur (UNAMID) in El Fasher, were on Monday September 5, decorated with medals in recognition of the professionalism and gallant service in carrying out their duties of bringing peace and stability in Darfur.

Presiding over the event, the UNAMID Force Commander, Lt Gen Paul Ignace Mella thanked the Peacekeepers for honoring the mandate.

“UNAMID congratulates you; we appreciate so much the eleven months you have spent here. UNAMID leadership is proud of the performance you have exhibited while serving in this mission, congratulations,” Mella said.

‎The Acting UNAMID Police Commissioner Dr. Mutasem Almajali commended the culture of Rwandan contingents, both Army and Police of holding joint medal events which, he stressed as unique to only Rwandan Contingents in the mission. Read more

Police nets notorious tax fraudster

Rwanda National Police on October 10, arrested Pascal Nshimiyimana a suspect in issuing fake invoices worth Rwf3 billion.

He was arrested near Gatuna Border as he was attempting to flee the country following reports that police was investigating his activities.

According to Deputy Commissioner in charge of Taxpayer Services at Rwanda Revenue Authority (RRA), Drocella Mukashyaka, the suspect was arrested by the Police after RRA detected and reported malicious companies that were applying for VAT refunds. Read more

Ugandan businessman hails RNP swiftness in curbing crime

Losing your valuables to thieves may sometimes turn into a cumbersome and problematic ordeal, especially when it involves crossing borders to another country.

One man’s ordeal however ended successfully, when Rwanda National Police (RNP) in connection with Interpol, recovered his iPhone and arrested the culprit who had fled with it from Uganda to Rwanda. Read more

Tales of Senior female police officers

One of the longest serving female officers in RNP is Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Rose Muhisoni, who currently serves as the Mess Manager.

She joined police at its inception in 2000 and has served in different capacities over the years. In an interview, SSP Muhisoni revealed her journey as one of the first senior female police officers, and what it means to serve in this capacity.

“My story begins in 1994 when I was serving as the Director of Judicial Police at the Ministry of Justice after the Genocide against the Tutsi. During that time, I took a judicial police course in Canada in 1997, where I witnessed police officers, male and female, working together to advance the safety of their community,” she says.

“By working with police officers on a daily basis during my studies, I began to appreciate the work of law enforcers in promoting justice and peace. So when I returned to Rwanda, I had a strong desire to work in a sphere that will enable me to directly serve in promoting fairness and justice – and so I joined RNP in 2000 as a new force.” Read more

Illicit liquor worth Rwf23 million seized, destroyed in Nyagatare and Gicumbi

The crackdown on trafficking, sell and use of narcotic drugs and banned drinks in the country has gained momentum after Police seized illegal substances valued at over Rwf23 million in various operations conducted in the districts of Nyagatare and Gicumbi in the last four months.

 The intercepted drugs include over 4000 litres of crude waragi (kanyanga) and 590 cartons of Chief Waragi, both banned gin in Rwanda, cannabis and 35 cartons of varied substandard medical drugs.

 The confiscated substances were destroyed separately on October 7 in presence of students, community members and local leaders in a public exercise intended to raise awareness against the vice.

 While speaking at the exercise in Nyagatare, where 2540 litres on crude waragi and 450 cartons of chief waragi were destroyed, the district mayor, Fred Sabiiti Atuhe recognized the success of anti-drug abuse campaigns, but challenged local leaders to lead the fight in their respective areas. Police, BNR partner to curb illegal money exchange

Rwanda National Police (RNP) and the National Bank of Rwanda (BNR) resolved to partner in overcoming illegal exchange of currencies in order to protect the economy against adverse effects that come with it.

Through this partnership, both institutions agreed to educate the business community about setting up legally recognized forex bureaus instead of conducting “black market” forex activities that cause inflation and other economy challenges.

Through this partnership, police carried out investigations on potential illegal money exchanges, and arrested eight suspects in Kigali on October 6.

The suspects were arrested in separate locations as they conducted unauthorized money exchanges, and are currently held at Muhima Police Station pending further investigations, Superintendent of Police (SP) Modeste Mbabazi, Police Spokesperson for Central Region, said. Read more

RNP marine unit heralds security on water bodies

The Commanding Officer of the Rwanda National Police Marine unit, Superintendent Alphonse Businge, expounded on how police and its partners ensure maximum security on water bodies in Rwanda.

 The unit was established in 2005 with 35 qualified personnel but the number has since increased by numerous folds operating the seven marine posts all over the country, with its headquarters in Mushonyi  Sector, Rutsiro District.

 “These posts have qualified marine officers with modern equipment charged with ensuring security and safety on Rwanda’s 17 inland lakes and three others shared with neighboring countries, as well as ensuring that these water bodies are utilized in a sustainable manner in accordance with national laws,” said Supt. A glance at ‘Kacyiru Police Hospital: The quest to become a ‘referral’

Walking into a hospital with hopes for quality services is one of the most encouraging moments for any patient.

Those that have walked through Kacyiru Police Hospital seeking for treatment, speak out on the kind of service and treatment they get.

Eunice Musabemwese, a 51-years old mother of four, spent years battling with abdominal pains, she frequented several hospitals trying to find out what was causing the pains and get treatment.

Musabemwese, a resident of Rwamagana District had lost hope yet the pain in her stomach was getting acute each day.

One morning, the bed-ridden ailing mother woke up to attend to one of her neighbors who had visited her.

“I was in a completely sorry state, my neighbor told me to try Kacyiru Police Hospital (KPH). I had completely lost hope, I didn’t believe there was a cure for the pain I had,” said Musabemwese.

Police Handball Club finishes season unbeaten

Champions elect Police Handball Club ensured a successful end to their unbeaten season after mastering a 65-25 win over closest rivals APR on Ocotber 10.

Second-placed APR was outmaneuvered at the Kimisagara youth centre seeking by the game’s lead scorer, Jean Paul Muhawenayo, who scored a tally of 11 goals. Read more
