GASABO: RNP extends fire safety awareness to over 1,300 students

The ongoing fire safety awareness conducted by the Rwanda National Police (RNP) Fire and Rescue Brigade (FRB), continued to students and teaching staff of Kagugu S.O.S Technical High School in Kinyinya Sector and G.S Rugando in Kimihurura Sector, both in Gasabo District.

On Wednesday, June 8, the awareness on preventing fire emergencies was conducted at Kagugu S.O.S Technical High School and continued to G.S Rugando on Thursday, June 9.

The training was initiated by the RNP Fire and Rescue Brigade to equip various sections of the public with basic fire safety skills to enable them to prevent and respond to basic fire emergencies.

The campaign launched in schools early last month, has so far benefited students and teaching staff in 15 schools in City of Kigali.

It follows similar outreach conducted in health and commercial facilities. It looks at the causes, classes and components of fire, and fire prevention measures.

Students were also trained on how to fight fires using various firefighting equipment such as fire extinguishers and fire blanket.

Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Jonas Rizinde, while speaking to the students, urged them to extend the acquired fire safety knowledge and skills to others in their homes.

?Use electricity appliances in your homes with caution to prevent anything or behaviours that can lead to fire outbreak," CIP Rizinde told the students.

He advised them to always avoid the main causes of fire in homes such as  overloading electric installation and  cables, and interfering with electric installation.

CIP Rizinde further urged them to always use cooking gas in their homes safely, including making sure that it is safely turned off after use and opening doors and windows for minutes before lighting it.

Rose Birungi in charge of discipline at G.S Rugando, thanked RNP for the training.

?From this training, both students and staff we learned what causes fire, which puts us on an advantage side for us to be safe here at school and in our respective homes. Today, we also know how to use firefighting gadgets in case fire breaks out," Birungi said.

RNP urges the public to always contact the FRB Brigade on toll-free line 111 and112 or 0788311120 and 0788311224 in case of fire, for swift response.
