Residents of Rusororo Sector in Gasabo District have been asked to break silence and report violence women and girls experience in their communities to facilitate the government efforts in combating the vice.
The call was made on December 18, by the vice mayor for the City of Kigali in charge of Social Affairs, Patricia Muhongerwa during the campaign against Gender Based Violence.
More than 2000 people took part in the campaign organized by African Evangelistic Enterprise (AEE) under the theme: “fighting GBV is equally your responsibility.”
“Most GBV incidences in homes or communities are not reported because they're committed behind doors. We need collective response to break stigma associated with gender violence," the vice mayor said.
Residents were also urged to always call the Police at any time to report GBV.
During the campaign, AEE donated 2,300 health insurance premiums (Mutuelle de Sante) to the disadvantaged residents of Rusororo Sector.
Muhongerwa thanked AEE for the social support and appealed to residents to subscribe to public health insurance, strengthen community policing initiatives and urged parents to watch over their children to prevent them from engaging in criminal acts like abusing drugs.
Mapasi Sindano, the Coordinator for AEE in the City of Kigali, also appealed to residents to strive for healthy living as a major factor in development.
