Handball: Police maintain lead

The National Handball Championship returned to action this weekend after a short break, with the reigning champions locking horns with College de Gisenyi away in Rubavu District on Saturday.

The table leaders maintained their season unbeaten run with 43 goals against 33 for the hosts.

New recruit; Felix Mukunzi scored nine goals for the record champions, the match individual high score.

Brax Nkengurutse and Zacharie Tuyishime also scored 8 and 6 goals for Police, respectively.

Police Handball coach, Inspector of Police (IP) Antoine Ntabanganyimana praised his team and the newly signed player in particular.

"Mukunzi created impact in the game. We had a difference of 10 goals today; in our first leg the difference was only three goals, and you can see Mukunzi's 9 goals created that big impact," AIP Ntabanganyimana said.

He thanked the "winning spirit" of his players and the support from the mother institution--Rwanda National Police (RNP)--which continue to guide them to success.

The seven-record champions now sits at the summit of the Western division with 15 maximum points.

The men’s championship features twelve clubs polled in two groups.

Police Handball Club features in the Western division alongside Munyove of Rusizi District, ES Gisenyi formerly College Inyemeramihigo, UR-CASS and ES Kigoma.

Police, last season, claimed four domestic titles including National Heroes Day tournament, the Genocide Memorial Tournament as well as the season-ending Carre d’As tournament.

Their next game will be against Munyove Handball Club of Rusizi District
