Police takes Gerayo Amahoro awareness to Volkswagen Rwanda

Gerayo Amahoro awareness continued on Thursday, June 8, at Volkswagen Rwanda factory in Masoro Special Economic Zone, Gasabo District, where Rwanda National Police (RNP) educated employees on road safety.

The RNP spokesperson, Commissioner of Police (CP) John Bosco Kabera, delivered road safety messages to the employees urging them to abide by traffic rules and regulations to prevent accidents and related consequences.

“When you are involved in a serious road crash, consequences are far reaching. It also affects your family, institution, other road users, public infrastructure and your country in general. As professional drivers and staff of Volkswagen Rwanda, you should be catalysts of behavior change, and it starts with you," CP Kabera said.

Over 650 road fatalities were registered across the country, last year and more than 4000 were injured.

Globally, more than 1.35 million people die in road accidents every year, making it the eighth leading cause of death, according to the World Health Organization.

It is, however, the first cause of death in children and young adult aged between 5-29 years. In developing countries, road crashes constitute the third leading cause of death.

CP Kabera urged Volkswagen workers to play their role in preventing road carnage. He noted that using a phone while driving, over speeding, not respecting pedestrians crosswalks, disregarding road signs and drunk-driving, among others, are the main causes of accidents.

According to WHO, the probability of having an accident multiply four times when calling while driving but  multiply 23 times when texting.

Serge Kamuhinda, the Chief Executive Officer of Volkswagen Rwanda commended Rwanda National Police for the road safety messages, which he said that they will guide their staff on safer road use.

"To have safer roads for every road user demands all our joint efforts by avoiding practices, which could lead to road crashes. Gerayo Amahoro will help us, our drivers to protect our lives as well as other road users, the cars we drive along with public infrastructure. We are happy to disseminate these safety messages to others,” Kamuhinda said.
