The Minister of Interior, Alfred Gasana called upon residents of Nyagatare District to be responsive against road accidents by observing traffic rules and regulations.
The Minister made the call in Tuesday, May 30, in Tabagwe Sector, Gishuro Cell in Kaborogota village, where he addressed a community gathering as part of the ongoing Gerayo Amahoro road safety campaign.
"We appreciate your efforts in fighting and preventing crimes, including cross border crimes; maintain that spirit.
However, in security, road safety is also key. So, use the road safely to avoid causing or involving in accidents, leading to loss of lives," Minister Gasana said.
"As a pedestrian, driver, motorcyclist or cyclist; use the road safely. Pedestrians should always use the left side of the road facing oncoming traffic and be vigilant when crossing the road, either at pedestrian crosswalks or other places where they don't exist," he added.
Pedestrians, motorcyclists and cyclists are the majority victims of road crashes, which are largely attributed to human behaviors.
Over 650 road fatalities and 4000 injuries were registered last year across the country.
The Minister also reminded drivers and taxi-moto operators to respect speed limits, but told the latter against transporting more than one passenger.
"We all have individual and collective responsibility to prevent accidents by adopting safer choices when using the road. Don't drive or ride when you drink and avoid using the phone or any other distractions. Pay attention when using the road because your safety, that of your passengers and other road users is your responsibility," Minister Gasana emphasized.
