MINUSCA Police Commissioner visit Rwandan camp

The Police Commissioner of the UN Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Central African Republic (MINUSCA), Gen. Roland Zamora visited the Rwandan Police peacekeepers' camp on July 28, and thanked them for their sacrifice and putting their life on the line for the sake of the civilian population.

While meeting the the Formed Police Unit (RWAFPU2) contingent deployed in Kaga-Bandoro region to

protect a camp of internally displaced police persons, Gen. Zamora said that their present, readiness and professional response has brought sanity in the area and reassured security of the people.

Kaga-Bandoro camp is about 400km from the capital Bangui. It is home to over 25.000 IDPs.

“I came to thank you for your determination and courage in restoring peace and stability in this area and the country in general,” the Police Commissioner said. Read more

How a motorcyclist protected money of passenger involved in accident

On Sunday, Augustine Kayinamura boarded a commercial motorcycle from the city centre to downtown Nyabugogo. Unfortunately, along the way, the motorcycle was involved in an accident when it was hit by a coaster bus.

Although the motorcyclist identified as Donat Ndayiramiye was left unhurt, Kayinamura sustained injuries, and was rushed to the University Teaching Hospital of Kigali (CHUK).

The victim was unconscious, thus couldn’t protect his handheld envelope, the only luggage he had at the time. The motorcyclist neither knew what was in the envelope.

The envelope contained Rwf5.2 million.

“When the accident occurred, and I realized that my passenger was unconscious, I rushed to protect his envelope, despite not knowing what was inside,” said Ndayiramiye. Read more

Somali officials visit RNP on anti-corruption programme

Officials from the Anti-Corruption Bureau of Puntland State of Somalia, yesterday, said that they are “considering Rwanda as a model country in fighting corruption” and intends to emulate the country’s strategies particularly those implemented by Rwanda National Police (RNP).

They made the remarks during their visit at the RNP General Headquarters, aimed at learning from the force’s strategies in prevention and fighting graft.

At RNP, they were received by Commissioner for Community policing, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Celestin Twahirwa, who briefed them on the forces strategies and partnership with other institutions in fighting graft.

The meeting was also attended by the Deputy Commissioner for Public Relations and Media, Chief Supt. Lynder Nkuranga and several Police officers attached to the anti-corruption unit. Read more

Police calls for safety precaution of swimming pools to prevent drowning

Rwanda National Police (RNP) has reminded owners of facilities with swimming pool to take the proper precautions and adhere to regulations to ensure the safety of people swimming.

The call follows an incident on Monday when two students drowned as they were swimming in a pool at Diane hotel in Nyanza District.

The victims, both male aged 14 and 15 years, were Senior Three students of Ecole Technique St. Peters Igihozo also in Nyanza.

Police said the incident, which occurred at about 3:30pm, was due to negligence of the hotel management that left the pool “unattended and with no one to intervene in real time.”Read more

Rulindo: 540kgs of stolen minerals recovered

Police in Rulindo District have recovered about 540 kilogrammes of minerals stolen from Rutongo mining concession, and arrested one person in connection with the act.

The cassiterite minerals were recovered on July 26 in the house of one, Elias Habanabakize, 28, located in Migendezo Cell of Cyunuzi Sector.

Habanabakize is currently detained at Murambi Police station pending further investigations.

The minerals were reportedly stolen from the concession owned by Rutongo Mining Company the previous day.

Police spokesperson for the Northern region, Inspector of Police (IP) Innocent Gasasira, said: “The management of Rutongo Mining Company reported the theft earlier that day (July 26), and investigations were launched immediately. Read more

Fighting drug trafficking: Nyamagabe court conducts public hearing of suspected drug dealer

A Primary court in Nyamagabe District, on July 28, held a public  hearing for one Emmanuel Ntakirutimana charged for alleged drug trafficking.

According to Inspector of Police (IP) Emmanuel Kayigi, the Police spokesperson for the Southern region, the public trial was held in the spirit of raising awareness and sending a atrong message against drug dealers.

Ntakirutimana had been arrested trafficking over 200 pieces of cannabis.

“All initiatives to fight and prevent  drug related crimes are implemented jointly with all partners in security, judiciary, governance and the public in general, and this specific public hearing is in that line,” IP Kayigi said. Read more
