Police in partnership with residents in Rubavu District, on December 19, arrested a man, who was at the time sneaking about 50 kilogrammes of cannabis into the country from the neighboring Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
Vincent Musabyimana was arrested in Busasamana Sector with 24kgs of cannabis before 25 other kilogrammes were also recovered in Kivumu Cell of Rubavu Sector, Police spokesperson for the Western region, Inspector of Police (IP) Eulade Gakwaya, said.
The suspect is currently detained at Busasamana Police Station, IP Gakwaya added.
“When residents saw Musabyimana with the drugs they immediately called the Police, and he was arrested red-handed,” the spokesperson said.
He thanked the residents for the continued partnership in breaking chains of supply and crime prevention in general.
In a related development, Police in Gicumbi District also intercepted a vehicle which was at the time trafficking about 70 dozen illicit gins in different brands, including Kiki Waragi, Zebra Waragi and African Gin.
The suspect identified as Alexis Rutayisire, who attempted to bribe police officers with Rwf20, 000, was also arrested and detained at Byumba Police station.
Fighting drug-related crimes is one of the priorities of Rwanda National Police (RNP) through operations and community policing efforts of community awareness and partnership with the people through information sharing.
