Gakenke Police joined by residents in special umuganda

As part of the Rwanda national police’s  programs to build strong community bonds against lawlessness police in Gakenke District on December 8, was joined by residents of Gakenke sector, Rusagara cell, in clearing underwater drainage tunnel that had been clogged by mudslides causing the  tunnel  to be waterlogged.

According to Inspector of Police (IP) Justin Mugenzi this police community liaisons officer this is also in line with the force’s usual approach to corporate social responsibility to create positive social and environmental impacts and that show a commitment to both stakeholders and the community.

Local officials also said the clogs were caused by inappropriate waste dumping by residents.

IP Murenzi said the three hour activity was also aimed at sensitizing the community against degrading the environment mainly through using illegal and improper mineral mining activities.

Speaking after the exercise, police urged residents to desist from illegal mining which has caused death in most causes.

“we should collectively prevent mining activity from causing any harm to the surrounding environment and people” he said.

He warned that those caught engaging in such malpractices will prosecuted before appealing to the public to share relevant information that may lead to prevention of accidents.

Rwanda National police has a fully-fledged unit dedicated to protection of the environment.

Recently police cemented a collaboration agreement with the ministry in charge of forestry aimed at enhancing existing and new environment protection activities.
