Thirty-nine Police officers and park rangers, on Friday, completed a three-week environmental protection course at the Police Training School (PTS) Gishari, in Rwamagana District.
The second intake, which includes 29 Police officers and 10 park rangers, was conducted in partnership with the Italian Police—Carabinieri.
While closing the course, the commandant of PTS, Commissioner of Police (CP) Vianney Nshimiyimana, said that protecting and conserving the environment is one of RNP tasks and responsibilities.

“This course aimed at improving and building capability in terms of anti-poaching using military techniques to increase the safety of Police officers and park rangers. This course is relevant to RNP, particularly in this season where we are experiencing natural disasters caused by human actions, destroying the environment,” said CP Nshimiyimana.

During the three weeks, trainees covered varied environmental related disciplines, including national plan against poaching, environmental investigation, anti-poaching and tactical movements, wildlife conservation, crime scene and evidence gathering.
Others include human-wildlife conflict, Rwanda wildlife legal framework, first aid, cartography, GPS, land navigation and reconnaissance.
The Commandant reminded the course participants to put the knowledge and skills to effective use. He further urged them to always be ready, exercise professionalism and be dedicated to their tasks.
CP Nshimiyimana thanked Carabinieri for the partnership, especially in training.
