Detainee running away for escape shot dead at Police station

Today, April 17, 2016 at around 7:00 am, Mbyariyehe Olivier, a detainee at Kiyumba Police Station in Muhanga District was shot dead while running  away to escape from the Police custody.

Mbyariyehe had been detained at the police station since 14 April, 2016 for assaulting and seriously injuring DASSO personnel, Hategekimana Jeremie, who was on duty and currently admitted at Kabgayi Hospital.

“On the day of his arrest, Mbyariyehe was found cutting trees in a government forest in Rongi Sector to burn charcoal; when the Village Chief, who was in company of two DASSO staff tried to stop him, he reacted violently hacking one of the DASSO personnel with a machete,” ACP Celestin Twahirwa, Rwanda National Police spokesperson, said.

ACP Twahirwa further pointed out that the offences committed are punishable under articles 30 and 416 of the penal code.

Mbyariyehe had also been accused by the neighbours of abusing drugs, thuggery, disorderly and appearing desperate. 

This morning, Mbyariyehe was relieved from handcuffs to facilitate him to go and easy himself, instead he run away,  the police officer on guard shot in air to warn  him but resisted and  subsequently  was shot dead.
