Presidential elections were incident-free, says Police

The presidential elections held on August 04 were conducted in a safe and secure environment as predicted, Rwanda National Police (RNP) said. RNP Spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Theos Badege, said the elections which involved a lot of movement of people to and from polling stations across the country, escorting electoral materials to and from poling centres, was “flawless.” “As expected, like before, Rwandans exercised their constitutional rights with utmost discipline, which defined the smooth, secure and incident-free presidential elections,” said ACP Badege. Police reassures security during elections

The Inspector General of Police, Emmanuel K. Gasana, on August 02 received a team of African Union observers currently in the country for the upcoming election. The IGP briefed the delegation, led by the former Interim President of Mali, Dioncounda Traore, on the security situation in the country and reassured to them of “peaceful, safe, and smooth elections.” The IGP underscored that the police established a security campaign plan for the entire electoral period – before, during, and after the elections. COMESA observers commend ‘elaborated security’ ahead of elections

The head of the electoral observatory mission of the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA), Bishop Mary Nkosi said that since her delegation arrived in Rwanda, they have not encountered any security related issues and that security organs have since been operating and enabling campaigns effects. The 15-member COMESA observers are in Rwanda since July 30 to monitor the August 4 presidential elections. Speaking during a meeting with the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Emmanuel K. Gasana, on August 03, Bishop Nkosi said: “Since the time we arrived in Rwanda, we have been following campaigns of the three candidates, and so far, security is very elaborate.” Read More

RNP hands over recovered €300,000 to owner

Rwanda National Police (RNP), on August 1, handed over the Euros 300, 000 (Approx. Rwf291m) to rightful owners – UAE Exchange Rwanda LTD, after it was recovered from two suspected thieves over the weekend.The money was handed over to UAE Exchange Country Head, Naghoor Riyaz by the Police spokesperson for the City of Kigali, Supt. Emmanuel Hitayezu in an event held at Kigali Metropolitan Police Headquarters in Remera. Speaking shortly after receiving the money, Naghoor said he was “overwhelmed by the swiftness and professionalism exhibited by RNP officers from the time the case was reported to the time we were informed that our money has been recovered.” Read More

Vehicle mechanical inspection booking goes online

Owners of vehicles will no longer have to queue for arrival number at mechanical inspection centres to have their automobiles inspected for their roadworthness as the Traffic and Road Safety department has shifted from manual to online booking. Under the new system, booking will be done through the web platform, Irembo and through mobile banking services, according to the traffic spokesperson. “We have shifted completely to online booking. This is an effective and efficient system, where a vehicle owner can choose any centre of their choice at their ample time and day,” CIP Kabanda said. Police impersonator arrested soliciting bribes

A man suspected of impersonating police has been arrested in Nyamasheke District as he attempted to defraud residents. Aprodice Usengimana, 43, currently detained at Kanjongo Police station, was arrested on July 31 following information that he was impersonating the commander of Kagano Police station, through which he duped some people. Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Theobald Kanamugire, Police spokesperson for the Western region, confirmed the arrest. “We have so far identified one person Usengimana duped. Preliminary investigations indicate that on July 30, he [Usengimana], while calling himself the commander of Kagano Police station, took Rwf50, 000 from one Jean Bosco Sibomana, promising him to release his brother,” said CIP Kanamugire.
