Public cautioned for moving without identifications

Residents of Rubavu district have been called upon to move with their personal identification for safety purposes.

The call was made by Supt Hamza Vita, the Western Region Police Spokesperson, on November 11, following the arrest of 61 people in the area, who include drug dealers, suspected thieves and people who were found without identifications.

Police in the area, on November 10, conducted an operation in the sectors of Kanama and Nyakiriba, arresting 61 people.

It also intercepted 20 bags of fertilizers allegedly meant to be smuggled out of the country and 30 litres of illicit brew.

Supt. Hamza explained that the operation was meant to fight idlers, who are said to be behind several criminal activities in the area like stealing, especially after consuming drugs.

He also called upon local leaders and the media fraternity to sensitize the public to always register and report visitors in the village book as one of the ways to identify wrongdoers.

“People should know that these fertilizers are meant to increase their production, but not for sale. This is therefore a warning to those who seduce others and buy it from them and even goes an extra-mile of smuggling it to other countries,” he warned.

The fertilizers are given to farmers by the government on a subsidized price, to boost agricultural production.
