Police officer picks money, returns it to owner

A Police officer attached to Remera Automobile Inspection Centre (AIC) in Gasabo District, on Monday, May 9, found a pocket wallet containing Frw40,000 in the parking lot, which was returned to the delighted rightful owner.

At about 6pm, as Senior Sergeant Fred Ntidendereza was discharging his duties at the AIC, he picked a wallet, which also contained other particulars, and he reported to his superiors.

The wallet had been dropped by one of the drivers, who was later identified as Hakim Niyongira.

Niyongira had already left the centre after the inspection of his vehicle was done.

Rwanda National Police (RNP) spokesperson, Commissioner of Police (CP) John Bosco Kabera, said that the pocket wallet also contained a driver's license and a service card, which helped to identify the rightful owner.

"Fortunate enough, the service card contained contacts of Hakim Niyongira, who was called, interviewed and everything matched before we handed over his intact wallet to him," CP Kabera said.

He added: "This practice of Police officers picking valuables including money, regardless of how small or big is, and returning them to the rightful owners is part of the institutional culture. These are ethics and values that are required of a Police officer."
