Police intercepts Rwf67, 000 fake notes, arrests suspect

Police in Nyarugenge District has arrested a man identified as Hamisi Nzabonimpa, 29, after he was found in possession of Rwf67, 000, all fake.

The suspect, who hails from Rutsiro District, was apprehended on November 11 in Nyabugogo after a tip-off to police.

The suspect is currently detained at Nyamirambo Police Station, pending further investigations.

Senior Superintendent Urbain Mwiseneza, the Central Regional Police Spokesperson, said: “The suspect went to a forex bureau in Nyabugogo and tried to ask an attendant where he can find a Tigo Cash stand in the area. But the forex bureau attendant actually noticed that the suspect was counting money, which was fake.”

He added: “He then informed Police in the area, who arrested Nzabonimpa and recovered on him, fake notes in Rwf5, 000 and Rwf2, 000 denominations, amounting to Rwf67, 000. The business community and the public in general should beware of such crooks, who might ruin their businesses. We have good working relations with members of the public to identify and report such people and most of them have been arrested.”

Counterfeit of fake notes fetches as prison sentence of two to five years and a fine of two to ten times the value of the counterfeit money, if convicted, as stipulated under article 604 of penal code.
