GASABO: Police foils motorcycle theft

Police in Gasabo District have arrested a man, who allegedly assaulted a taxi-moto operator and attempted to steal his motorcycle.

The incident occurred on Thursday, March 9, when the suspect allegedly committed the violent theft in Kagara village, Musezero cell in Gisozi sector.

Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Sylvestre Twajamahoro, the Police spokesperson for the City of Kigali said that the motorcycle TVS plate number, RC 036C was recovered from the suspect at about 02:30a.m, shortly after the members of the public reported the violent theft.

"Local residents called the Police after witnessing the violent theft. The suspected thief assaulted the taxi-moto operator and attempted to flee with the motorcycle. The suspect was intercepted by the police together with the residents," CIP Twajamahoro said.

The suspect said that he intended to disassemble the motorcycle and sell it as scraps.

CIP Twajamahoro thanked the residents for the swift community policing act that facilitated the arrest of the suspect and recovery of the motorcycle.

The suspect was handed over to RIB for further investigations.

Under article 168 of the law determining offences and penalties in general, any person convicted for violent theft face between five and seven years in prison and a fine of between Frw3 million and Frw5 million.
