Fight against smuggling rages on

Just a day after 11 people were arrested in Nyamasheke District with 870kgs of smuggled second-hand clothes and shoes; five other bales of used clothes have been impounded from smugglers in Nyaruguru District.

The five bales were seized from three suspected smugglers on Friday, March 3, in Kirwa Village,  Yaramba cell of Ngera sector.

The suspects had sneaked the bales into Rwanda from the neighbouring Burundi through a porous border point, according to Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Emmanuel Habiyaremye, the Police spokesperson for the Southern region.

"They were intercepted by the Police and local authorities in the wee hours of Friday. It was a group of five smugglers, who had crossed into Rwanda from Burundi with five bales of used clothes, three of them were arrested but two others managed to flee during the early morning operation," CIP Habiyaremye said.

The group was at the time headed to Busoro market in Gishamvu sector of Huye District, where they intended to sell the second-hand clothes.

CIP Habiyaremye thanked residents especially those residing on the borderline, for their role in fighting smuggling and fraud.
