EAPCCO GAMES: Rwanda wins more 14 medals

Rwanda National Police (RNP) won 14 medals on Day Four of the EAPCCO Games, on Friday March 24, bringing the the tally to 21 medals.

The 14 medals include nine gold, two silver and three bronze.

The RNP football team beat Burundi 5-3 on penalties to clinch gold and a trophy. Both teams were locked to 3-goals each after Burundi overturned the 3-1 goal difference from the first leg with 2-0 win in the return leg. Extra time produced no difference for both sides with penalties left to separate the two sides.

The RNP volleyball team also won gold after beating Kenya (25-21, 30-28, 21-25, 25-19) in the finals played at BK Arena.

Rwanda swept the volleyball awards, with Venuste Gatsinzi named the MVP and Best Attacker, Yvan Nsabimana Mahoro the Best Setter, Placide Sibomana as Best Blocker, Merci Gisubizo the Best Server, and Simon Rwigema the Best Libero.

Kenya's Andrew Wafula was named the Best Receiver.

Martha Niyonkuru won gold in women long jump ahead of Mary Zawadi (Uganda) and Monica Safania (Kenya).

Rwanda also bagged a hat-trick in women triple jump with Martha Niyonkuru winning gold, Angelique Tuyizere (silver) and Marie Grace Ingabire bronze.

In karate, Rwanda won five gold medals in individual karate men, individual karate women, karate men and women as well as a gold medal and trophy for the first country.

In long jump men, Pompidou Tuyishime won silver. Kenya's Isaac Kuselel Kirwa and Ruto Kiplagat won gold and bronze, respectively.

Rwanda also won bronze both in relay 4×100 (men) and 4×400 (women).
