Police FC win CECAFA Kagame Cup opener

Vital 'O 5-1 Banadir

Police FC 1-0 El Merreikh

Police FC's bid for the 2014 CECAFA Kagame Cup glory started with a decisive and well deserved 1-0 win  over Sudan's El Merreikh in fifth match of the tournament played on Saturday at Amahoro stadium.

Kipson Atuheire headed in the lonely goal in the 18th minute after a Jimmy Mbaraga's well curved-in free-kick.

Coach Andre Cassa Mbugo's tactical play of refusing the Sudan side to settle on the ball worked for the debutant and could have produced more goals for Police FC had Atuheire and Moussa Habimana utilised the only two golden chances of the match.

Atuheire had only the goalkeeper to beat at the start of the second half but Magoola denied him the chance.

Habimana, who came in for Atuheire in the 75th minute was also denied similar chance five minutes after being introduced in the game.

Sina Jerome also came close to scoring the best goal of the tournament so far with a non-stop shot from about 30 yards but was denied yet again by the goalkeeper.

Despite these denied chances, Police defenders kept El Merreikh strikers in check to keep a clean sheet and to level points with defending champions Vital 'O of Burundi who thrashed Banadir 5-1 in an earlier match.

Cassa Mbugo, who won all-two matches as Police head coach hailed his side for the composure and showcasing a winning spirit throughout the match.
