The Ministry of Internal Security on Friday released a security status report in the country, indicating a reduction of crimes by 2.1 percent in the first quarter of this financial year (July, August and September), an improvement resulting from various policing measures initiated.
Minister Musa Fazil Harerimana released the report in a press conference held at the Ministry’s offices in Kacyiru.
Assault, theft, drug abuse and defilement/rape were the most committed crimes, though they also reduced.
Most drug-related cases were registered in the Eastern Province. Majority of the registered cases related to assault were due to domestic wrangles and excessive drinking.
Road security status
Road traffic related offences also reduced by 34.9 percent in the same period compared to the last quarter of the 2012/2013 fiscal year (April, May and June).
This decrease was also due to various preventive measures that were established such as the road safety sensitizations and the decentralisation of the Motor Vehicle Mechanical Inspection Centres (MIC).
The Minister said: “This is a commendable step in ensuring safety of people living in Rwanda and their property, but we need to double our efforts to even deal with the few cases that still exist.”
With three MICs currently, including a Mobile Test Lane, Rwanda National Police is currently in the process to establish other three centres; Ngoma, Huye and Karongi districts, which will be operational effective next year.
He appealed to the public to adhere to the new law which penalises people caught smoking in public places.
He added: “As we move towards the end of the year, we urge the public to plan their festivities and events in a lawful and peaceful manner to avoid any insecurity.”
The Commissioner for Public Relations and Community Policing, ACP, Damas Gatare, also appealed to the community to strengthen their cooperation with Rwanda National Police, through community policing, to fight and prevent security threats in their localities.
