[PHOTOS]: Police crowned handball league champions for third successive season

Police have been crowned the champions of the 2016 National Handball League for the third time in a row after sharing spoils with their closest challengers APR in a thriller final match played on Sunday at Kimisagara Youth Centre.

The 31-all final score gave the reigning champions an up hand to the trophy and to wrap up the season unbeaten and with only one draw.

The last day score ensured that the law enforcers finished the season with 47 points against APR’s 45.

The final match started with a score-on-score encounter as each team netting an equalizer every time the other scored.

It was definitely a break or make match and it was tight in both sides scoring 13-13 in the first half and equally adding more 18 each in the second half.

Zacharie Tuyishime and Jean Baptiste Habimana scored individual high goals, netting nine and six times respectively.

Having beaten the run-ups in the first leg – 23-21 – it was time for APR to reverse the trend that would have crowned them the champions.

However, the rhythm remained the same for the law enforcers.

“We worked hard for the trophy and we deserved it. We trained hard and played hard to make this impact and success,” said the assistant coach, Sgt Alphonse Udahemuka.

He thanked his players for the team spirit, hard work and “showcasing the spirit of champions” throughout the season.
