Police in Ngororero District arrested Jacqueline Nyiranzitonda, 33, and Eugenie Mukamana 36, for allegedly trafficking and selling cannabis in the country.

The duo was arrested on November 17 enroute to Kabaya sector in Ngororero from Rubavu District after they were found in possession of 2, 476 pellets.

They were at the time traveling in a public vehicle with the narcotics wrapped around their waist. Their arrest followed a tip-off from one of the passengers.

Nyiranzitonda had just completed her one year sentence in prison over the same crime.

The duo admitted committing the crime.  Nyiranzitonda told Police that she had a buyer in Muhororo sector.

Senior Superintendent (SSP) Fred Simugaya, the District Police Commander said they received credible information from a person, who was well versed with suspects’ criminal business.

The Western Region Police Spokesperson, Superintendent Vita Hamza commended the public for acting responsibly to fight crimes.

“This is a brave act that everyone should emulate to effectively deal with such crimes,” Supt. Hamza said.

He advised the youth, who constitute the highest number of drug dealers, to desist from such crimes and instead join the campaign against it.

Drug related crimes are punished severely under the Rwandan laws.
