Police extend lead in handball league dominance

Police handball club extended their national league dominance this season after defeating reigning champions Gicumbi 38-30 at Kimisagara Youth Sports Centre on June 22.

Goals from Gilbert Mutuyimana (12) and Haruna Bizimana (six) helped Police sink their archrivals, who had Emilly Giraneza and Modest Ifashuwayo as their top scorers with six goals apiece.

“We have now gone five points clear at the top of the table thanks to great work from my players,” said Police coach Antoine Ntanganyimana.

“We are able to make these achievements through vigorous training, team spirit and discipline on and off the pitch,” he added.

This, he believes, will guide them to league championship this season, the third in four seasons.

Police remain at the summit of the standings with 25 points, five ahead of ES Kigoma, who moved into second place following their 33-21 win over University of Rwanda’s College of Education (formerly KIE).

Gicumbi dropped to the third position with 18 points.
