UK High Commissioner visits RNP HQs

The United Kingdom High Commissioner to Rwanda, His Excellency William Gelling, this Tuesday, visited Rwanda National Police Headquarters in Kacyiru and pledged to support the force in various capacity building disciplines such as training.

The High Commissioner was received by the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Emmanuel K. Gasana.

ACP Damas Gatare, Police spokesperson said the IGP briefed the High Commissioner of the activities of the force to ensure security in the country and thanked the UK government for its continued support in various policing domains.

He pointed out capacity building of the force as a fundamental tool of which the RNP has embarked on in order to further ensure peace and security in the country and beyond its borders.   

The United Kingdom supports RNP mainly in areas of capacity building such as forensic and crime investigation.

The partnership between UK and RNP has also seen some police officers pursue master’s degree in criminology and Forensic sciences from the UK-based universities of Teesside and Bramhill.

His Excellency the High Commission, Gelling said his government is committed to working with RNP in potential areas of capacity building and training.

Areas of cooperation include fire and rescue and forensic training.

While commenting on the security in the country, the UK newly appointed high commissioner to Rwanda said he is impressed on how streets in Kigali are kept safe.

“I am very impressed; the officers are very smart, very good, and very polite. Every police officer I met on way as I was driving was excellent, I am genuinely impressed,” said Gelling.
