The five-time national handball league champions – Police Handball Club – is well prepared and ready to defend their trophy when the 2017 league edition kicks off this weekend, the club coach has said.

The defending champions will play their first match against University of Rwanda-College of Education (UR-CE) this Sunday before facing UR-College of Arts and Social Sciences and Nyakabanda, respectively, according to the 2017 National Handball League calendar released by Rwanda Handball Federation.

And coach Assistant Inspector of Police (AIP) Antoine Ntabanganyimana, said: “We have signed six new players. The signing was based on the institution’s – Rwanda National Police (RNP) – desire to build the club and to further improve its performance not only locally but also at the regional and continental level.”

Four of the new players are police officers.

“We have had impressive performance in the last three consecutive seasons, but that is at the national level; we want to build on that and be a competitive club even in other regional competitions,” he added.

The 2015 East and Central Africa Handball championship winners, won the national handball league in 2011, 2012, 2014, 2015 and 2016.

Last year alone, they claimed three silverwares including Heroes Day Cup; Genocide Memorial and Super Cup.
